GoMocs.com is providing a weekly summer series highlighting the Chattanooga Mocs basketball program. This consists of a brief feature below and the attached highlight video from the 2012-13 season. This week’s spotlight shines on rising junior Ronrico White.
White has impressed from the moment he stepped on campus in 2011, but never more than the tumultuous 2013 campaign. He took on point guard responsibilities after the knee injury to Dontay Hampton kept the senior one out for all but five contests.
White, a natural off guard, led his squad in assists with 97 (3.0 per game) while ranking third in scoring (10.2 ppg). He also paced the team shooting 82.6 percent (123-149) from the free throw line. White ranked among the Southern Conference leaders in scoring (28th), assists (12th), free throw percentage (5th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).
Ronrico (149) started all 32 contests in 2013. Along with Z. Mason (149) and Gee McGhee (196), the trio hoisted 494 free throws, making 350 (70.9%). Those totals eclipsed Wofford’s attempts (477) and the Terriers’ (346) and Samford’s (332) makes for the year. In fact, the threesome’s 494 attempts eclipsed 22 teams nationally while sinking more than 35 squads.
Here are a few of White’s season highlights:
>Made the Dr Pepper Classic All-Tournament team averaging 16 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the event. Posted first 20-point night of his career in the opening win over High Point with 21 on 5-10 shooting from the field, 2-7 from three-point range and 9-11 at the charity stripe.
>Was lights out at the free throw line in February making 34 of 36 attempts (94.4%). He made 26 straight from January 24-February 23 tying UTC Hall of Famer William Gordon for the fifth-longest streak in school history.
>Set new career highs in points (21 vs. High Point), rebounds (6 vs. High Point and App State), assists (6 vs. Samford twice and College of Charleston) and tying for steals (4 vs. App State).
>Had one of his best showings on the big stage with 17 points in the loss at LSU. He hit 6-12 from the floor including 3-5 from beyond the arc while dropping both free throw attempts.
>Scored in double digits 14 times with nine contests of five or more assists and five with three or steals.
