GoMocs.com concludes its preview of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s offense with its Training Camp Rundown of the quarterbacks today. UTC has four signal callers competing at the position, led by a pair of very experienced returnees.
Sophomore Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) enters the 2013 campaign as the returning starter. He had an outstanding freshman season, finishing third in the voting for the Jerry Rice Award given to the national freshman of the year. He was third in the Southern Conference with 237.8 yards of total offense per game and was the first Moc QB to lead the team in rushing (82.2 ypg).
He set or tied UTC freshman records for total offense, passing touchdowns (13), completions (167), attempts (256), yards (1,712) and rushing TDs (7). Lost in all of his numbers was the fact that his five interceptions were the fewest among the top-5 quarterbacks in the SoCon and the lowest number by a starter on record at UTC.
Huesman has had a strong offseason, adding weight to his 6-1, 215-lb. frame. He was recently elected one of five captains by his teammates and was tabbed second team All-SoCon in the preseason coaches poll. He is also listed among the quarterbacks on the College Football Performance Award Watch List heading into his second season as the starter.
Junior Terrell Robinson (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) has moved over to receiver and is expected to be one of the top performers in the league. Phil Steele lists him as a top-30 wideout in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), while the SoCon coaches gave him preseason second team recognition.
“We are very fortunate to have (Terrell) playing some wide receiver because he is a great athlete,” stated Jacob Huesman. “That really brings another element to the table.”
Robinson will still be listed as the No. 2 quarterback, and he has looked very sharp in that limited role throughout the preseason. He did not play many snaps under center in the first intrasquad, but was 3-6 for 60 yards and a touchdown pass in the second scrimmage on Aug. 16.
Robinson is 3-2 as a starter over the last two seasons. He has completed 66% of his passes (57-87) in his career with eight TD passes. Last season, he was 30-44 with two TDs and no interceptions. He also ran 52 times from the QB position, amassing 232 yards (4.5 per carry) and three scores.
“We have Jacob coming back and he had a really nice freshman year last year, and we are expecting him to have another great season,” stated head coach Russ Huesman. “We are looking for him to improve on things Coach Durden has asked him to improve on. Terrell Robinson will be the backup but he will start at wide receiver. He is going to play a lot of different things but he will be our backup.”
Two true freshmen who are competing for the third spot are Tyler Roberson (Martinez, Ga.) and Alejandro Bennifield (Lovejoy, Ga.). Both were two-star prospects coming out of high school and both have bright futures at UTC.
“We have two young freshmen who we think are going to be pretty good,” added Coach Huesman. “Both Alejando Bennifield and Tyler Roberson are very talented.”
Bennifield is a two-time all-region southpaw from Lovejoy (Ga.) High School, who guided the Wildcats to the Georgia AAAA state title game as a junior. Roberson was an all-state selection after guiding his Augusta Christian squad to the South Carolina Independent Schools AAA state title.
Roberson played the most snaps between the two in the scrimmages, but both have shown tremendous progress in camp. Despite being true freshmen, they have shown flashes of what they are capable of doing throughout camp.
“Camp is always a mental thing for everybody,” said Roberson. “It was mentally tough but I thought all of us held up pretty well physically. The biggest thing was getting adjusted to the playbook and adjusting to what Coach Durden wants us to do with the ball.
