The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team had two individuals and one doubles tandem advance in the main draw on the opening day of the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club. Sophomore Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) won both her singles and doubles matches to lead the Lady Mocs.
Jones teamed up with fellow sophomore Katie Polk (Woodstock, Ga.) to post an 8-6 win over Amandine Faouzi and Marcela Jiminez of Eastern Kentucky in the No. 2 draw. It was the only doubles win in three matches for UTC, but Jones and Polk will compete in tomorrow’s semifinals.
Jones scored a strong (6-2, 6-1) win over Faouzi in the No. 1 singles bracket. She will face UAB’s Rachel Daniell in Saturday’s semifinals.
Junior Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) also had a solid start to her season. She posted a three-set win over UT Martin’s Sarah Candeloro (6-1, 4-6, 7-5) in the No. 3 singles bracket. She faces Eastern Kentucky’s Milena Poffo in tomorrow’s semis.
Singles and doubles consolation and main draw matches resume tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. (E.D.T.) at the Champions Club. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete results and updated draws.
