CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s cross country teams will close out the regular season the same way it started – at home. The Mocs will host the annual Front Runner Invitational Saturday, October 19 at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.
Chattanooga will host eight schools including seven from Tennessee and two from Georgia. Competing this weekend along with UTC will be Austin Peay, Bryan College, Darton State, Lipscomb, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee State, UT Martin.
The Mocs return top runners Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) and Amanda Cotter (Bristol, Conn.) to the course. Henderson missed Chattanooga’s trip to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic while Cotter has yet to complete an event this year. She fell at the Lady Mocs’ home opener midway through the first mile and struggled, along with a host of other runners, with heat at the Georgia State Invitational two weeks later.
Henderson claimed top honors in UTC’s PowerAde Invitational and the Georgia State Invitational earning Southern Conference Runner of the Week honors following each event and was selected the league’s Runner of the Month for September.
Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) has been a consistent competitor for UTC. She was third for the Lady Mocs at the PowerAde Invitational and fifth in the Georgia State 4K Invitational. She placed eighth overall and was the first UTC runner across the line at the Greater Louisville Classic 5K in a driving rain.
Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) finished the GLC ninth and helped Chattanooga to a first place finish at the PowerAde Invitational and second at Georgia State’s meet. Freshmen Madalyn Garland (Evansville, Tenn.), Katie Ray (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.) will round out the team in the season finale.
Senior Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) along with classmates Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) and John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) will lead the Mocs onto the course this weekend. Cotter led the Mocs to a first place finish at the season opening PowerAde Invitational and was selected the SoCon Runner of the Week for his performance. He placed third at the Georgia State Invitational and led the Mocs to a third place finish while taking UTC to an 11th place finish in the top division (Gold) at the Greater Louisville Classic after crossing the line third overall.
Cole returned to the course this season after missing most of last year with a nagging injury. He helped the Mocs to win the PowerAde, placed 11th at the Georgia State Invitational and was the second UTC runner across the line at the Greater Louisville Classic.
Sophomore Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) has a pair of Top 10 finishes this season including a third place finish in the Mocs’ PowerAde win and was ninth at Georgia State. Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) was fifth at the PowerAde while Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) posted a pair of Top 20 finishes. Also running for UTC will be Zack Darby (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.).
The women’s 2-mile event will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Moccasin Bend Race Course followed by the men’s 5K. Admission is free.
