Mocs Hit the Road for Georgia Southern, Citadel

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A couple of long bus rides face the Mocs volleyball team this weekend as Statesboro, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., are marked on the team’s travel itinerary for Friday and Saturday. Chattanooga takes on Georgia Southern Friday at 6 p.m. and The Citadel Saturday at 4 p.m. in one of its final road trips of the season.

But like all long road trips, a win on the road could make the ride seem a lot shorter and much more enjoyable.

“We’re going on the road in search of wins,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “Georgia Southern is a tough opponent and you can never count The Citadel out, especially if you’re playing on the road. They’re going to be a couple of tough matches but if our team can play with consistency, we’ve shown we can win.”

Chattanooga is coming off back-to-back home losses to Elon and UNCG after upsetting the Samford Bulldogs Oct. 9 at Maclellan Gym. The Mocs are 2-6 in the SoCon and are looking to qualify for the Southern Conference Tournament for the second time in as many years. UTC is currently ranked 10th in the league with just the top eight teams punching their tickets for the postseason.

Georgia Southern comes into the matchup 19-3 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Conference. The Eagles lone conference loss came against Furman at the beginning of the month in a five-set melee.  GSU is 10-2 at home and 3-1 at home against SoCon opponents.

Kym Coley leads the Eagles with a .376 hitting percentage and Jamie DeRatt is the kills leader with 274 on the season. Coley’s hitting percentage and DeRatt’s 3.70 kills per set rank them both second in the league in their respective categories.

On the tail-end of the road trip, The Citadel is 11th in the SoCon with an 0-8 record. The Bulldogs have won five matches on the season, claiming victories over South Carolina State, Gardner-Webb, Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State twice.

Bulldogs setter Rachel Keefer ranks eighth in the SoCon with 7.32 assists per set – totaling 80 assists on the season. Middle blocker Lauren Hurt ranks among the top three in the SoCon with 85 blocks on the season and defensive specialist Erin Bucherl is averaging 4.05 digs per set.

Both matches are available via live stats and live video. Links to both video and live stats can be found on the volleyball schedule page and the top of this page.
