NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s Distance Medley Relay Teams placed second and fifth at the Tennessee State Invitational Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
The men’s A team finished second in the DMR with a time of 10:27.60 led off by newcomer Harry Smithers followed by Marquis Carter, Trevor Janssen and anchored by senior Nathan Wanuch. The B team was led off by senior Mark Cole with DeQuantez Sandifer making a return to the track. Matthew Marshall and Patrick O’Brien ran the final two legs.
“The B team was leading the A team for the first two legs, but I knew Trevor would step up and Nathan would finish it off,” Chattanooga head coach Bill Guatier said.
In the opening leg of the event, Cole was outdistancing Smithers and Sandifer maintained the lead for the B team before Janssen stepped up and passed teammate Matthew Marshall to put the A team ahead. Wanuch powered the A team over the final leg to lead UTC to a second place finish. The B team placed fifth with a time of 10:39.51.
James Stovall, a member of the Southern Conference champion football team at UTC, placed 10th in his first collegiate attempt at the triple jump with a distance of 14.00m.
“Stovall did a great job,” Gautier said. “He had to do football workouts on Friday and he still did a great job.”
Iman Isang placed 11th in the men’s 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.08.
Chattanooga will return to the track next weekend at the Samford Invitational. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be working toward qualifying times for the upcoming Southern Conference tournament.
