Softball Hosts Lipscomb Thursday at Frost Stadium

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team hosts its first mid-week game of the season Thursday night in a 6 p.m. matchup at Frost Stadium against Lipscomb.  The in-state matchup with the Bison of Music City pins the 14-12 Mocs against a 23-4 Lipscomb team that is beginning to receive national attention.

Chattanooga is coming off a 1-1 weekend in Boone, N.C., with its third game of its Southern Conference opener against Appalachian State cancelled due to rain.  Sophomore Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) continues to be the Mocs’ offensive catalyst, batting .342 and leading the team with 26 hits.  The catcher is slugging .487, second only to homeruns leader Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.), who is slugging .506 with five long-shots. 

Junior Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) continues to pace Chattanooga’s pen with a 0.78 ERA, ranking eighth in the NCAA, and seven wins.  The right-hander has also recorded two saves, thus far.  Sophomore right-hander Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) ranks second with a 2.01 ERA and six wins.  Henderson has struck out 63 batters, averaging 6.6 strikeouts per game.

Lipscomb comes into Thursday’s game on a four-game winning streak and just four losses, earning the Bison 11 votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 and 10 votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls.  Among impressive wins over Virginia Tech and UAB, Lipscomb is also 1-0 against SoCon opponents with a 9-2 win over Appalachian State.

The lineup for the Bison features six batting above the .300 mark, led by infielder Paige Neely.  The junior is batting .385 and is tied for the team lead in extra-base hits with 11.  Infielder Kristen Sturdivant also totals 11 extra-base hits, including a team-best 30 RBI and seven homeruns.

As a team, Lipscomb ranks 11th in the nation in scoring, averaging 6.78 runs per game, and is 12th in the NCAA with a .852 winning percentage.

The Bison pitching staff is led by ace Ashley Anderson.  Anderson boasts a 9-0 record, a 1.59 ERA and three solo shutouts.
