The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the host for the 2014 Southern Conference Tennis Championships this week. The event features all 20 of the league’s men’s and women’s teams and takes place April 16-19 at the Champions Club.
Located on the banks of the Tennessee River at 1096 Lupton Drive in the Rivermont Park, the Champions Club is hosting the SoCon Tournament for the second time. The event was last held there in 2011 when the College of Charleston won the women’s title and Samford took the men’s trophy.
This is the fifth time overall the Mocs have hosted the men’s tournament and the fourth time UTC has hosted the women’s event. Admission to the tournament is free.
UTC’s women’s team enters the championship with a 17-4 overall record and the No. 3 seed with a 7-2 mark in SoCon play. The Mocs will face No. 6 seed Georgia Southern (10-10, 4-5 SoCon) on Thursday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.).
Chattanooga is 10-0 at home this season and posted a 7-0 shutout over Georgia Southern in the regular season meeting. UTC’s two losses in league play were both 4-3 setbacks on the road at Furman and Samford. The Paladins and Eagles finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the league race, respectively.
UTC won five of the first seven women’s SoCon Tournament titles from 1984 to 1990. The 1990 crown was the last for Chattanooga, who trails Furman (16) and College of Charleston (6) for the most championships in conference history.
The Mocs’ men’s squad enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed with a 6-13 overall mark. UTC was 1-8 in SoCon action and will face eighth-seeded Davidson in the first round. First serve is set for Wednesday, April 16, at 11:00 a.m. The Mocs lost to the Wildcats 5-2 during the regular season.
The men are second in the league with 12 tournament titles, trailing Furman’s 14 championships. Chattanooga’s last title was the 2000 tournament that was also hosted in the Scenic City.
