SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- One of the worst-kept secrets of the golf season came to fruition Tuesday afternoon. The Southern Conference announced Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Emily McLennan (Queensland, Australia) as the league’s Golfer of the Month for April.

McLennan won the award by virtue of two strong performances. One featured career highs, while the other saw her breakthrough for her first collegiate win.

She captured the SoCon Championship with a solid week shooting 222 on a tough Moss Creek Golf Club tract. Her rounds of 73, 74 and 75 produced a wire-to-wire four-stroke win.

That came one week after another step forward in her already impressive two-year career. She tied for eighth at the Web.com Intercollegiate with a career-best 216 (E) total. That came after a stunning first day when she carded 68 and 71 for new low scores for 18 and 36 holes in tourney.

McLennan earned All-SoCon honors in a season where she already set the school record for birdies with 85. Her 74.68 scoring average is the fifth-best currently in the Mocs record books and is the best all-time by a sophomore by more than a stroke per round.

The monthly honor is a first for a Moc in 2013-14. The program claimed four of the seven weekly awards with Jordan Britt (Chattanooga, Tenn.) getting three and McLennan one.

It’s the ninth SoCon Golfer of the Month for the program all-time. McLennan joins teammates Britt and Agathe Sauzon (Valence, France) and Emma de Groot (2008-11) who won it a record six times. It is the fifth consecutive year a Chattanooga golfer has claimed the award.
