CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs athletics licensing program took a major step forward in 2012-13. It’s not a surprise considering UTC’s numbers have seen an uptick in four of the last five years.
“It’s exciting,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn stated. “Those numbers breed a great deal of optimism to me. It shows we have a great foundation to build upon.”
The 2012-13 numbers from Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the University’s licensing agent based in Atlanta, Ga., were historic. Gross royalties increased by a record 29 percent over the past fiscal year, which marks the largest royalty collection in UTC’s history. The 29 percent growth placed Chattanooga at No. 8 in the nation for largest percentage increase among CLC institutions.
Apparel accounted for 56.4 percent of all Mocs branded items sold at retail with 43.6 percent in non-apparel merchandise. Team Golf, one of the top providers for UTC merchandising, saw amazing growth which is not too surprising. Golf products were very much in fashion after Steven Fox’s epic win at the United States Amateur Championship in August of 2012.
The increase has made an impact on availability as well. There are now more outlets to find a greater number of quality, licensed Chattanooga Mocs gear.
A perfect example is the “2013 Mocs Season Shirt”. There are currently six outlets with more than 25 locations providing the product around the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The UTC Bookstore and Scrappy Sam’s kiosk at Northgate are constants in the market. Scrappy Sam’s is joined by Mocs Sports Properties partners Walgreens (16 stores) and BI-LO (5 stores). Target (Hamilton Place & Hixson) and Sports Stop in Hamilton Place Mall are also providing the product.
“We encourage all of our alumni, students and fans to provide their support by buying officially licensed merchandise from these retailers,” Blackburn said. “When these companies and others see the demand, a larger selection of gear becomes available.
“This is a point of emphasis as we start a new and exciting year at Chattanooga.”
By purchasing licensed merchandise, fans show their support in two ways. The obvious is in displaying their loyal support of the Mocs. The second is the monetary support that comes through UTC’s licensing program. The UT System Office of Trademark Licensing encourages alumni and fans to “Look for the Label”.
Click the “Look for the Label” link above for more information. The key is to look for the “Officially Licensed Collegiate Product” label, hang tag or hologram attached to shirts, hats, etc. That label ensures three things:
1) A portion of each purchase is returned to University to aid meeting departmental goals in providing the best student experience possible.
2) The University’s trademark logos are used properly and that the purchaser is up-to-date with the latest marks.
3) The label, hang tag or hologram provides an assurance of quality. Not only does it show that the manufacturer has been given permission to use the marks, it also is proof positive that the merchandise passes the strict standards set by the University and the system.
The UT System Licensing program oversees all three campuses with athletics programs – Chattanooga, Knoxville and Martin – as well as the Health Science Center in Memphis.
There is no better time than now to purchase Chattanooga Mocs gear. “Meet the Mocs” is Saturday, August 17, with a full day of activity.
