Mocs Have Another Record-Breaking Semester in the Classroom

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has a clearly stated vision for Mocs Athletics; to establish comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard.  This is a goal the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at UTC continue to work towards each season, academically, athletically and socially.

Over the past five years, the Mocs have won 13 regular season and 17 Southern Conference Tournament titles, far more than any other school in the league.  Chattanooga student-athletes are also widely known for their work in the community, but this week we celebrate the record-breaking achievements of the Mocs in the classroom during the 2010 fall semester.

UTC topped several program records for academic success in the fall, including setting a new benchmark with a 2.95 overall student-athlete grade-point-average.  This is the fifth consecutive term the Mocs have raised their overall g.p.a.  In addition, Chattanooga also had a record number of student-athletes on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll and the Dean's List.

"We have increased our overall grade-point-average more than one-tenth of a point in each of the last three years," stated UTC Director of Athletics Rick Hart.  "This continuous improvement is not only a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, but it also shows the commitment to comprehensive excellence by our coaches, staff and University community."

The student-athletes and coaches will be honored at the Academic Night Celebration during the men's basketball game vs. UNC Greensboro on Thursday, Jan. 27.  There will be a pregame reception for the student-athletes in McKenzie Arena, along with halftime recognition at the game.  The Dayle May Award will also be presented to the male and female senior student-athletes with the highest cumulative g.p.a.

In order to earn Athletics Director's Honor Roll recognition, a student-athlete must post a 3.0 or greater g.p.a. for the semester.  Chattanooga shattered its previous record with 168 student-athletes, 56% of all Mocs, on the AD Honor Roll during the fall.  It is the third straight term over half of the Mocs posted a 3.0 or higher.

Additionally, a new program mark was set with 137 Mocs posting a 3.2 to earn a spot on the Dean's List.  UTC also tied a school-record with 31 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 g.p.a. Of those 31, 15 accomplished the feat during their competition season.

"We have invested valuable resources in our Student-Athlete Support Services that now includes four full-time staff members and a number of tutors and academic coaches," explained Hart.  "This is the first semester we have worked with a full staff and I expect our numbers to continue to increase in the future.  Ultimately, our goal is to maintain a 3.0 g.p.a. across the board, and having half of our student-athletes with a 3.0 or better for the third straight semester shows that were are headed in the right direction."

UTC had already announced that the 36 Academic All-SoCon honorees for the fall was a program high, but the school records did not stop there.  A total of 11 teams posted a 3.0 or higher, setting a new mark.  Women's golf led the way with a 3.65 team g.p.a., the highest team semester g.p.a. on record.  All six members of the women's golf team made the Dean's List

The Mocs had a school-record 11 teams record a 3.0+ g.p.a., including
Women's Golf - 3.65**
