Chattanooga was third in the nation in total awards across the board. Only Grand Valley State (6) and Michigan Tech (5), competing in Group 3, took home more honors than UTC. Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Awards are presented in 16 categories, with each divided into three groups based upon school size and conference affiliations to promote fairness. A total of 782 entries were received for the 2010-11 year.
"First and foremost ,I would like to thank our student-athletes and coaches for creating a product that we can promote and market that embodies our vision of establishing comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard," stated Director of Athletics Rick Hart. "I would also like to thank our fans, boosters, sponsors and University community for the tremendous support they give to our program."
"The NACMA Best of Awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire athletics staff at UTC," continued Hart. "I am very lucky to work with such a strong group of individuals who together make a great team. It was a thrill to see some of them recognized in front of their peers at the NACMA Convention today."
The Mocs' Gold Award came in the New Revenue Generating Idea category for the reserved First Tennessee Pavilion Tailgating spaces that were initiated in the 2010 football season. As the demand for football tailgating space grew, UTC saw an opportunity to create a new revenue stream while enhancing the fan experience in the First Tennessee Pavilion. Tailgaters are now able to reserve a space that includes power and cable TV under the cover of the First Tennessee Pavilion and be right in the middle of all of the action on game day.
Chattanooga's first Silver Award came in the Sponsorship Program category for the Memorial Blue & Gold Tipoff Game presented by Prater's. In its second year, this event kicks off the Mocs men's and women's basketball season with a basketball exhibition in the First Tennessee Pavilion. The unique setting for basketball was such a hit that is garnered two title sponsors for the 2010 edition.
The second Silver Award was in the T-Shirt Design category and included the "I Bleed Blue and Gold" Mocs Maniacs Tee. Created for the UTC student fan group, the McDonald's Mocs Maniacs, this was a blue tie-dye T-Shirt. The front read "I Bleed Blue and Gold" and the McDonald's Mocs Maniacs logo was placed on the back. This was a very popular piece of Mocs swag on the UTC campus during the school year.
Finally, the Bronze Award came for one for one of the biggest days on the UTC campus last season, the Whiteout against Appalachian State for the football home opener on Sept. 4, 2010. This was in the Single-Day Attendance Promotion category and resulted in 15,235 fans, the third largest crowd in Finley Stadium history.
UTC continues its recent history of strong showings at the NACMA Best of Awards ceremony. Last season, the Mocs took home two Golds and a Silver at the convention in Anaheim, Calif.
