Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
Thoughts on pressure
"There is pressure to play the 7 p.m. game in your own tournament and I didn't know if we could do that. I really didn't know if we could go 2-for-21 from the three-point line and getting out-rebounded by 13. You are going to see an awful lot of things in the next two months that you never thought you would see at Chattanooga. We'll be playing zone, switching up defenses, and we're going to have to do that in a very creative way. We've lost our three best defenders and when that happens you're not going to be great defensively. You're not going to be great on the glass. I am awfully happy and you've got a lot of happy kids who have had a lot of things happen to them that get to play for a championship tomorrow night. We are thankful, we are excited and we're playing at seven."
Thoughts on what this win meant after losing Jones
"We needed to win. We needed Rico to make big shots. We needed to make big free throws. We needed to get a big rebound. We needed to win a tight one like that. It feels good to be in a tight one, and it feels good to win a tight one. I told them the harder you work the luckier you get, and we're just going to have to work really hard. I saw some leadership out there from Z. Mason. I saw a lot of positive things out there. We are not in a comfort zone at all. I didn't think we were very good. I thought we made some shots and gutted some stuff out, but hopefully this gives us a little confidence. We can take a deep breath and play a little bit. We still don't look like we do in practice and that's uncomfortable- not only for me, but for the kids. They have to start playing in a game like they do in practice and then the game will be easier for them. Right now it's not real easy for them."
Thoughts on switching the defense up
"We are just going to have to keep people off-balance. We went man-to-man and we went zone late, and I thought it really helped us. It caused them to take a little off the clock and we went back to man-to-man late and then back to zone, and we just need to get better at a variety of things. We will have a couple of days after the tournament to work on a few other things."
Thoughts on freshman experience
"We have made a commitment and we are going to go with Farad and Alex and they just have to get better, which they will. They will get more comfortable. Farad is a great shooter. Right now he's thinking about it and he's struggling, but he will get through it."
Thoughts on Utah Valley
"I know they are big, I know they are physical and we played them last year. I know that the coach's son always likes to come here to get his game off. I don't know a whole lot about them. I know they are well coached, big, strong and physical. I know the big kid had a good night tonight and I'm going to go watch him right now."
Ronrico White, guard, sophomore
Thoughts after getting the win
"I stopped everybody in the locker room, because if was pretty rowdy. I asked them how good it felt, and I said we need to make it happen every night. They responded with, 'Let's do it, let's do it,' and we're going to make it happen."
Thoughts on adjusting to a floor without Casey Jones
"I felt pretty comfortable tonight. I played a little bit of wing last year and a little bit earlier in the season, so Coach Shulman feels like he can switch me up a little, but I have to respond."
On what helped the Mocs win the game
"We made consecutive stops. High Point was scoring early in the game and we weren't, but we did a good job of stopping each other. It was a great victory. It was a collective team effort."
On how it feels to win the first game of the Dr Pepper Classic
"There is no feeling. This is our house and we have to win this championship."
On what the Mocs have to do to win the Dr Pepper Classic
"Everybody is going to have to step up. Coach needs me to step up at the three, Farad is going to have to step up at the one, and to win it's going to be a team effort."
Z. Mason, forward, junior
Feeling on the win
"It feels good because that's a good team. For us to come out and get a big win like that feels good. We have another one tomorrow, but we will definitely celebrate this one."
On what was hardest about tonight's game
"It was tough because we had only had two practices coming back from Christmas break. For us to come out and playing like that after the break on two practices says a lot about our team. It was the first two practices since Casey got hurt. We're hungry and we just want to continue to play hard. We want to string some wins together."
