Mocs in Second after 18 Holes at SoCon Championship

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. --- The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team battled through tough, windy conditions to shoot 298 at the Southern Conference Championship on the Ralston Creek Course. Three UTC student-athletes ranked in the top 10 after 18 holes to place the squad in second, one stroke behind Davidson at 297.

The Mocs were led by Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.), Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria). The trio are in the tourney’s top 10 tied for second, fifth and seventh, respectively.

Fox is one shot out of the lead after a level par 72. He was even through 15 holes when a bad break on 16 looked to sideline his round. His approach plugged in the back of a greenside bunker. His first attempts from the covered, downhill lie ended up in the middle of the bunker.

He expertly played to within three feet for his fourth shot leading to a nice bogey. Fox answered that with a perfect drive on the par four 17th. His second shot was played over the flag and spun back to four feet from the hole. The birdie putt was true leading to his 72.

Robb’s round was a study in consistency. He posted a career-high 16 pars with lone bogeys on 12 and 18 for a 74. Weilguni leads Chattanooga with four birdies. He made the turn at plus three, and managed to hold on at that number battling the elements for his 75.

Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) rounded out the counters with a 77. That puts him at tied for 13th. Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) had the drop score with an 80.

Davidson is the leader at 297 (+9). The Wildcats were in the second wave of teams to take the course and posted their strong round as the Mocs, College of Charleston and Georgia Southern made the turn at +6, +7 and +7. Chattanooga played the backside at four over ahead of the Cougars (+14) and Eagles (+20).

The wind gusts regularly blew up to 30 miles per hour and sustained winds were around 15. This grew as the day went on which makes the Mocs back nine much more impressive. Appalachian State stands in third at +17. Todd Eckstein (Davidson) leads individually at minus. Taylor Coalson (UNCG) is tied with Fox in second place at even.

The second 18 starts Monday morning at 10:30 a.m., for the Mocs. Paired with Davidson and Appalachian State, UTC will be led off by Johnston. Bunn (10:40), Weilguni (10:50), Robb (11:00) and Fox (11:10). Live scoring is linked above and on the men’s golf schedule page on GoMocs.com.
