Blackburn Appointed to Tennessee Hall of Fame Board

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Chattanooga Mocs Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn was recently appointed to the board of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Blackburn’s appointment was announced by Tennessee Speaker of the House Beth Harwell (R-Nashville).

“I could not be prouder nor more humbled by this appointment,” Blackburn stated. “It is a great honor. There is a long and proud athletics history in our great state. I look forward to serving.”

The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, a non-profit 501c3, was founded by a group known as the Middle Tennessee Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association. The State Legislature passed legislation in 1994 to officially create the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. The Board is composed of 25 Tennessee citizens, eight each appointed by the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Speaker of the House; the 25th member of the Board is the State Treasurer or his/her designee.

Speaker Harwell’s appointment is on the basis of Blackburn’s commitment to the student-athlete in his 20-plus years work in collegiate athletics.

“David’s efforts to promote and encourage athletics in Tennessee will be very beneficial to the board of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame,” said Speaker Harwell. “He understands the positive effects athletics have on students, and will be fully committed to promoting the organization. I appreciate his willingness to serve.”

Blackburn is a 1990 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He has more than two decades of experience in college athletics beginning his career at his alma mater in 1993 working with then-head football coach Phillip Fulmer, serving in a variety of roles within the program. He held his most recent position since 2008 as direct oversight of Vols football as its senior-level administrator.

David Blackburn is an excellent choice to serve on the board for the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame,” said Majority Leader Gerald McCormick (R-Chattanooga). “He has a passion for athletics, and understands the importance of student participation, which the Hall of Fame promotes.”
