CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga honored its three women’s soccer players on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. The Mocs fell 3-1 to Southern Conference foe The Citadel in UTC’s home finale.
The Mocs are 5-10 on the year and 0-7 in league play while the Bulldogs improve to 5-8-2 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
Chattanooga freshman Monica Speth (Janesville, Wisc.) scored her fifth goal of the season in a scramble in front of the goal. Senior Andria Aurand (Hixson, Tenn.) lofted a corner kick to the front of the goal. Junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) picked up the pass and her header went high with a ricochet off the cross bar. Sophomore Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) picked up the bounce and headed it to Speth whose shot cleared the Bulldog keeper for the score.
The Citadel’s first goal came in the 25th minute on a one-v-one by Ruth Leiva who got past her defender and found the net from the left side for the first goal of the game. The second score was just less than six minutes later when Nicole Levermann scored her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick. Lea Raedle’s corner was placed inside the box and Levermann jumped over the UTC defense and headed the ball into the net for what would prove to be the game winner.
Ana Mesa added an insurance goal late in the game for the final 3-1 tally. She picked up a deflection off a UTC player on the right side near the goal and lofted a shot just over the outstretched hand of Chattanooga keeper senior Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.).
The Mocs honored seniors Andria Aurand, Kelly Crew (Brisbane, Australia) and Taylor Mangrum prior to Sunday’s game. Crew was unable to play due to an injury sustained Friday night against Francis Marion.
The Mocs will close out the season with three straight road games beginning Friday at Elon. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
