CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Dimitry Coronel and Zako Valjarevic combined for 47 points to lead Maine to an 89-85 overtime win over Middle Tennessee in the opening game of the 24th Dr Pepper Classic. The Black Bears are now 2-9, while the Blue Raiders fall to 8-5.
Maine shot 14 of 22 from 3pt range (63.6%) in the victory. Coronel scored 27 points with eight rebounds and four assists, while Valjarevic added 20 with five assists.
Valjarevic’s fourth trey of the game gave his squad an 86-82 lead with 31 seconds left in the extra period. Kerry Hammonds got MT within two, 86-84, with a layup when things got a little crazy.
The Black Bears were called for a free throw violation with just over 15 seconds to go, but the Blue Raiders turned the ball over with 9.7 remaining at midcourt. They trade single free throws before Shaun Lawton put the game with two free throws with five seconds left.
Middle Tennessee was led by Neiko Hunter with 20 points and seven rebounds. Shawn Jones added 16 points and 20 boards as the Blue Raiders dominated the glass 52-35.
