Mock Earns Second SoCon Weekly Honor

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Corey Mock is the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced today.  Mock won the Navy Classic at 165 pounds on Saturday, Nov. 23, upping his overall record to 10-0 this season.

Mock has taken home two of the three SoCon weekly honors this season.  He scored bonus points in three of his four wins over the weekend, leading UTC to a fifth place finish in the 14-team field.

Mock opened with a 16-0 (4:18) technical fall over Bucknell’s Robert Schlitt in the second period.  He followed that with a pin against Franklin & Marshall’s Theodore King in the quarters.  He scored a 10-1 major decision over Navy’s John Keck in the semifinals and defeated Navy’s Peyton Walsh (3-2) to win the 165 bracket.

A transfer from North Carolina and a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mock has been impressive in the early stages of his UTC career.  He was not scored on in his first nine matches, finally giving up his first takedown in the finals of the Navy Classic.

Mock is ranked No. 5 in the Amateur Wrestling News top-20 and No. 7 in the Intermat listings.  Chattanooga is back in action against Purdue on Sunday, Dec. 15, in Atlanta, Ga.  The next home contest is the Taziki’s Candlelight Dinner Match on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 7:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym.
