Five Mocs Make All-SoCon Team

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team made up half of the All-Southern Conference squad, the league office announced today.  The Mocs had five on the all-league team for the second straight season and the fourth time in the last six years.

Junior Nick Soto led the Mocs with his third career selection to the All-SoCon team.  He is 30-9 overall and currently No. 16 in the NCAA Coaches Panel and No. 17 in the RPI.  A two-time SoCon Champion, Soto is 19-0 in regular season league matches, including 6-0 this season.  He won the league at 133 as a freshman and 125 last year.

Chattanooga took each of the last four spots in the lineup, beginning with junior Levi Clemons at 174.  Clemons is No. 32 in the NCAA Coaches Panel with a 22-13 overall record.  He is looking for his first SoCon title at this weekend’s tournament after going 6-0 in SoCon matches.

Sophomore John Lampe earned the pick at 184.  He is No. 33 in the RPI with a 17-10 overall record.  He was 7-0 in league action, coming out on top in three one-point victories.  He lost in overtime in the SoCon title match after going 5-0 at 174 as a freshman.

Freshman Scottie Boykin was undefeated at 6-0 in SoCon bouts at 197, earning all-league honors in his first year.  He is 19-13 overall and scored at least nine points in each of his SoCon matches.

Freshman Dawson Peck grabbed the spot at heavyweight with a 5-1 SoCon record.  He is 12-1 since transferring to UTC from Virginia Tech in January.  He is currently No. 24 on the NCAA Coaches Panel and No. 23 in the RPI.

Michael Pongracz was the other Moc honored today, joining Peck and Boykin on the SoCon All-Freshman team.  Pongracz is 20-12 overall, 10-7 at 141 and 4-2 in SoCon matches.  Campbell and Chattanooga were the only teams in the league with three on the All-Freshman team.

UTC wrapped up the 2014 Southern Conference Regular Season title with a 7-0 mark in league action and a 16-7 overall record. It is the 28th crown in the 37 years the program has competed in the league.

The Mocs are ranked No. 24 in the nation and head to the SoCon Championships on Saturday, March 8, in Buies Creek, N.C.  Action beings at 9:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) with links for live video and live scoring available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
