University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling coach Heath Eslinger announced the 2014-15 schedule for the Mocs today. UTC has nine home dates on the docket for the upcoming season, including the Blue-Gold match, six duals and the Southern Scuffle.
Chattanooga’s non-conference home schedule is highlighted by two matches against top opponents. UTC opens its home slate on Friday, Nov. 12, against Purdue. The Mocs also host Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 15, as a part of the NWCA National Duals.
“This is a great home schedule,” stated Eslinger. “Between the Scuffle, Oklahoma and Purdue, our wrestling community will be treated to some of the best competition in the nation. There are a lot of quality matches and a chance for us to get some good wins, both individually and as a team.”
Action begins on Saturday, Nov. 1, with the Blue-Gold exhibition matches in Maclellan Gym at 11:00 a.m. The regular season gets started with the annual trip to Salem, Va., for the Hokie Open on Nov. 9. The Mocs stay on the road for the next two weekends, at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Nov. 15 and the Navy Classic on Nov. 22.
After hosting the Big Ten Boilermakers, Chattanooga takes on North Carolina in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 14. The Mocs then travel to Old Dominion on Dec. 20 to close out the year. UTC has three matches against teams that finished in the top-25 at last year’s NCAA’s, including the No. 10 Sooners, No. 23 Monarchs and the No. 25 Tar Heels.
The annual Southern Scuffle has grown into the top in-season collegiate tournament in the nation and will return to the Scenic City on Jan. 1-2. The 30-team event again takes place in McKenzie Arena. UTC follows that up with the Virginia Duals on Jan. 9-10.
After a Jan. 16 trip to Gardner-Webb to start Southern Conference action, Chattanooga hosts four straight home duals. Campbell visits Maclellan Gym on Jan. 18, followed by The Citadel on Jan. 23. VMI is next on Jan. 25 and Davidson on Jan. 30. Road trips to Appalachian State (Feb. 8) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (Feb. 22) are wrapped around the Oklahoma match to close out the regular season.
The Southern Conference Tournament will make its first appearance in Asheville, N.C., on Saturday, March 7. Set to take place in UNC Ashville’s Kimmel Arena, the SoCon Wrestling Tournament coincides with the league’s men’s and women’s basketball championships.
The season ends with the 2015 NCAA Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. The three-day national meet is set for March 19-21.
The Mocs return nine of 10 starters from last year’s 16-7 squad that won its 28th SoCon Title. UTC was ranked No. 24 in the final regular season USA Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll.
