Three wrestlers from the State of Tennessee’s Division I Class AAA Dual Tournament championship squad, Soddy Daisy High School, and one from the Division II State Champion Baylor School, will be staying in their hometowns of Chattanooga and joining Bono’s program for the 2007-08 season.
Matthew Lettner, Jason McCroskey and Tyler Roberson are the trio from Soddy Daisy, and Daniel Waddell prepped at Baylor.
Lettner claimed the individual state title at 215 pounds his senior year at Soddy Daisy. He rolled to a perfect 53-0 record last season and was 55-8 as a junior. Lettner was listed as Best of Preps each of the last two seasons by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
McCroskey placed third at this year’s state tournament in the 140-pound division and was 48-2 on the year. He is a two-time Best of Preps selection.
“Matt is a big strong kid with a great work ethic,” Bono said. “He moves extremely well and will be a great heavyweight. Jason has a unique style that will make him very dangerous in college. He is tall and could end up wrestling at 184 pounds.”
Roberson is a two-time state champion for the Trojans, winning the 171-pound title as a junior and the 189-pound trophy this past season. He registered a 53-3 record his junior year and was 46-1 in 2006-07. Roberson was also a two-time Best of Preps honoree.
Waddell led the Red Raiders to their fourth consecutive state championship and won his second consecutive individual state crown. Waddell captured the 152-pound title last year and went 46-1. He compiled a 46-1 record as a senior and claimed the 160-pound state bracket.
Waddell recently placed fourth at the NHSCA Junior Nationals and earned his second High School All-America accolades with an eighth-place finish at the Senior Nationals. He was named to the NHSCA All-Academic Team this summer.
“Tyler is great kid who has the desire and work ethic to be great,” Bono said. “He is one of four signees who come from a strong State Championship Soddy Daisy program. Daniel is taking after his father and wrestling for the Mocs. He is a great athlete who strives to be the best.”
The quartet joins four other prep wrestlers who signed with UTC in the early signing period, including Zack Coltek of Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., Ben Johnson of The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Demetrius Johnson of Memphis’ Brighton High School and Ethan Winel from Montini Catholic High School in Brookview, Ill.
