Mocs at NCAA Wrestling Championships

ST. LOUIS --- Five University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestlers are still alive after first-round consolation match victories late Thursday night at the 2008 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Javier Maldonado (125), Cody Cleveland (141), Seth Garvin (157), Lloyd Rogers (174) and Matt Koz (197) can still achieve their goal of earning All-American honors.  But they will have to do so by working their way up through the consolation brackets.

Steve Hromada, Joey Knox and Josh Edmondson ended their seasons with first-round consolation losses.

The eight Mocs qualifiers lost each of their preliminary matches in the opening session Thursday, going 0-for-8.

Three Mocs took their respective opponent to at least one overtime period in the first session.  One of the highlights of the morning session, which drew an announced crowd of 15,513 fans at the Scottrade Center, was senior Steve Hromada's match at 133 pounds.  Hromada and Hofstra's Lou Ruggirello went through nine extra periods before Ruggirello advanced with a 3-2 victory.

Head Coach Chris Bono protested the decision, as Ruggirello's one-point escape came right at the whistle to end the period.  The protest committee denied Bono's protest.

Also wrestling in extra time was junior Seth Garvin.  The 157-pounder put up a valiant effort against third-seeded Dan Vallimont of Penn State.  He tied the match with an escape late in the third period.  Vallimont secured an 8-6 win with a takedown with 22 seconds remaining in the extra period.

Senior Matt Koz dropped an overtime decision to George Mason's Cayle Byers at 197 pounds.  With the match tied at 1-1 after regulation, Byers earned a 3-1 victory with a takedown at the 20-second mark.
