Wrestlers Steve Hromada and Javier Maldonado were named to the Division I All-Academic Team for the 2007-08 season, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced.

Hromada and Maldonado, both outgoing seniors for the Mocs, were NCAA Championships Qualifiers in March.

“Steve and Javier are both deserving of this honor,” UTC Head Coach Chris Bono said.  “I demand the total package in our program, a balance between academics and wrestling.  These guys understand that and were able to excel on the mat and in the classroom.  We will use them as examples for all student-athletes in our program.”

To qualify for the prestigious honor, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, been an NCAA Qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule and have competed in at least 60 percent of the team’s schedule.

Hromada placed third at the 2008 Southern Conference Championships at 133 pounds and earned a wildcard entry to the NCAAs.  During the year, he won his division at the Keystone Classic and overcame injuries to earn the No. 2 seed in the SoCon Tournament.  He finished the season with a 17-11 record.

A native of Wheatley Heights, N.Y., Hromada had a 3.0 GPA in the Fall semester and has maintained a 3.25 GPA during his career.

Maldonado, a two-time member of the All-Academic Team, claimed his third straight SoCon title at 125 pounds and earned his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.  He was nationally ranked throughout the season, compiled a 19-9 overall record and never lost to a SoCon opponent during his career.

The Kissimmee, Fla., native was a member of UTC’s Dean’s List for the Fall semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA.  He carries a 3.57 overall GPA.

This year, 87 wrestlers made the Division I All-Academic Team.  Last year’s list included 57.
