The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team battled back from an early hole to post a 26-12 win over UNC Greensboro at Maclellan Gym today. The Mocs take over sole possession of first place in the SoCon race with a 3-0 league record, 8-6 overall. The Spartans fell to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon.
The day started with the 174 match, pitting the Mocs' 20th ranked freshman Jake Young against UNCG junior and two-time NCAA qualifier Byron Sigmon. Young took a 2-0 lead into the second period and was heading for another takedown in the second. Sigmon countered and caught young on his back, scoring a pin at the 4:41 mark for a 6-0 lead.
The Mocs looked to settle things in the 184 match with sophomore Jason McCroskey boasting a career 7-0 mark in SoCon matches before today. He was leading 4-3 late in the third period and had enough riding time to score the extra point. However, Spartan junior Andrew Saunders scored a takedown and erased the riding time advantage to hang on for the 5-4 win. The decision put UNCG up 9-0 and stunned the 475 fans in attendance.
Chattanooga found itself in danger of snapping its 27-match SoCon winning streak and dropping a league home dual for the first time since the 2003 season. However, freshman Niko Brown stepped into the 197 match and scored a big win. He fought hard for a 6-3 decision over Ryan Sughrue to improve to 3-0 in SoCon action.
Brown's win was the first of four straight for the Mocs. Junior Tom Minwell shutout Peter Sturgeon 4-0 in the 285 match while sophomore Demetrius Johnson scored bonus points in an 11-3 major decision over Eric Chandler. Johnson's win at 125 put the Mocs on top for good at 10-9 and avenged a loss to Chandler at the Hokie Open earlier in the season.
Senior Josh Statum scored a 6-3 decision over Casy Boyle before the Spartans put one more scare into the Mocs' victory plans. Sophomore Ivan Lopouchanski scored an escape and takedown in the third period to defeat Ben Johnson and close the gap to 13-12.
The Mocs' last three wins all included bonus points, including a technical fall from freshman Brandon Wright (149) and major decisions by freshman Josh Condon (157) and sophomore Brandon Wright (165).
The Mocs are off for the next two weeks before hosting Appalachian State and Northern Iowa on Feb. 6. Action begins at 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) at Maclellan Gym in the final home matches of the 2010 season. Live video on Chattanooga All-Access and live scoring are both available on GoMocs.com.
