Mocs Open Season With Virginia Trip
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opens the 2012-13 season on the road this weekend.  The Mocs will compete in a quad meet at the University of Virginia and the Hokie Open in Salem, Va.

Action begins on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 9:00 a.m. (E.D.T.) when UTC faces Ohio in Charlottesville.  The Mocs will then face Anderson at 10:30 a.m. and the 16th-ranked Cavaliers at Noon.  Live scoring is tentatively scheduled for the three duals on Saturday.  If available, links will be posted on the wrestling schedule page on

The Mocs had a big 18-17 win over Ohio in Maclellan Gym on Dec. 12, 2011.  The Bobcats finished 5-7 last season and placed fourth at the MAC Championships.  They were picked sixth in the 2012-13 MAC Preseason Poll.

Chattanooga is 10-0 all time against NCAA Division II Anderson.  The Trojans are ranked 10th in the NCAA DII East Region.

Virginia is No. 16 in the preseason NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll after going 11-1 last year.  The Mocs lost the only meeting with UVa., 32-5 on Jan. 11, 1997, in Atlanta, Ga.

UTC will take part in the annual Hokie Open in Salem, Va., on Sunday, Nov. 4.  The Mocs have competed in the prestigious event numerous times in recent years.  Sophomores Nick Soto (3rd at 133) and Kevin Malone (5th at 285) both placed as freshman in last year's tournament.

Junior Jake Young won the Hokie Open at 174 in his freshman debut in 2010.  He is looking to get back on the mat after losing the last two seasons due to injuries.  For more information on the Hokie Open, including links for stats, results and scoring, visit

Kevin Malone will have his hands full in the Ohio match.  He will likely see No. 8 Jeremy Johnson, a 2012 All-American, at heavyweight.  Johnson posted a 3-2 decision over Malone in last year's dual meet.

The Mocs were selected as the preseason favorite to win the Southern Conference title by the league's coaches.  UTC has won 28 SoCon titles since joining the league in 1978.  Head coach Heath Eslinger's squad claimed the tournament crown in 2012, received four of eight first-place votes and 46 points overall, narrowly edging The Citadel.

Senior Dean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.), a two-time SoCon champion at 149, is the preseason pick at 141 this year. Senior Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.) earned the selection at 197.

The UTC wrestling team recorded the nation's 13th highest grade-point-average for the 2011-12 season according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).  The Mocs posted a 3.15 g.p.a. among its starters and top reserves in 2011-12.

Between home dual matches and the Southern Scuffle, the Mocs will bring six of the top seven teams from the 2012 NCAA Championships to the Scenic City during the 2012-13 season.  Highlighted by a Nov. 16 visit from Iowa, the Mocs home schedule features seven events, including the return of the prestigious Southern Scuffle.

The Scuffle (Jan. 1-2) will feature NCAA Champion Penn State, runner-up Minnesota and top-five finishers Cornell and Oklahoma State.  No. 7 Illinois visits Maclellan Gym for a dual meet in Jan. 6 and there are five home Southern Conference duals.  Season and single-match tickets are on sale now at the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627) or online at
