Mocs Go for Share of SoCon Title Saturday
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team can grab a share of the 2013 Southern Conference regular season title with a pair of wins this weekend.  The Mocs host VMI and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in a tri-meet on Saturday, Feb. 23.  Action begins at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) with three straight matches in Maclellan Gym.

SIUE and VMI get things started early with their 10:00 a.m. dual.  The Mocs will then take on VMI at Noon and SIUE at 2:00 p.m.

The Mocs will wrap up the regular season on Monday night when they host Campbell in Maclellan Gym.  Start time for that match has moved up one hour to 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for the match and available at the gate or on GoMocs.com.  Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

The Mocs are 8-6 on the year, and 4-0 in SoCon action.  The league wins were against Davidson (37-7), at Appalachian State (29-9), at Gardner-Webb (40-6) and against The Citadel (22-20).  UTC also has wins over Ohio (21-12), Anderson (37-6), Cumberland (49-0) and Princeton (27-10).  Four of the six losses have come against ranked teams in No. 16 Virginia (9-26), No. 2 Iowa (6-37), No. 2 Oklahoma State (9-41) and No. 9 Illinois (10-29).

QUICK NOTES ON THE MOCS

  • Head Coach Heath Eslinger is 42-28 in four years with the Mocs. He is one win away from tying his collegiate coach, Mark Leen for No. 4 on the Mocs head coaching wins list. Leen was 43-35-1 (.551) in six seasons from 1996-01.
  • Senior Niko Brown (197) is 12-0 in dual matches and has a team-high seven pins.
  • Senior Josh Condon (165) is 3-0 in SoCon matches with three pins.

SOTO & BROWN RANKED THIS WEEK
Sophomore Nick Soto is No. 17 according to Intermat and No. 18 in the WIN rankings this week.  He is also listed at No. 18 in the AWN rankings.  Soto is 21-6 overall with an 11-3 mark in dual matches.  He finished second at the Wolfpack Open and won the Hokie Open earlier in the year.  Senior Niko Brown is No. 18 in this week's AWN top-20 at 197 pounds.  He is currently 24-3 overall and undefeated in dual matches at 12-0.  

MOCS SET RECORDS IN 2012 FALL SEMESTER
The UTC wrestling team had an overall program record 2.89 grade-point-average for the 2012 fall semester.  The Mocs also set team records with 14 on the Dean's List and 18 on the AD Honor Roll.  Senior Dean Pavlou (Health & Human Performance) and freshman John Lampe (History) were two of 28 student-athletes at UTC with a 4.0 g.p.a. in the fall.
