(Photo Credit: GoMocs.com): earned her second career SoCon Golfer of the Week nod with a solid performance at the Briar’s Creek InvitationalSPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Three times in five weeks the Chattanooga Mocs boast the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week. Emily McLennan (Queensland, Australia) follows last week’s winner Jordan Britt (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who won two in four weeks.
It’s just the second time the Mocs have posted three SoCon weekly honors in a season and the first time winning back-to-back weeks since Yushira Budhram (2010-11), Emma de Groot (2008-11) and Christine Wolf (2008-11) captured three straight in March 2011.
“I think it says a lot for the program and what we’re doing,” Head Coach Colette Murray said. “Emily played really well on a difficult course. She really composed herself after a shaky start. She believed in the game plan, committed to it and got results.
“It’s a small step as she continues to tap into her enormous potential on the course.”
McLennan tied for seventh shooting four-over par 220 at the Briar’s Creek Invitational. She bested four nationally-ranked golfers including No. 8 Ashlan Ramsey (Clemson) by two shots and No. 12 Sloan Shanahan (Clemson) by 12. She led the tournament with a career-high 40 pars turning in five birdies and nine bogeys as well.
She turned in cards of 75, 74 and 71 on the difficult Club at Briar’s Creek tract. The 220 total ties for McLennan’s career best.
The weekly award is the second in Emily’s career as she won it on March 13, 2013 after tying for ninth at the JMU Eagle Landing Invite. McLennan is the third Moc (de Groot and Britt) to win multiple Golfer of the Week honors and the 21st overall. It’s the 13th time a Chattanooga golfer has claimed it.
The Mocs closes out the regular season April 7-8 at the Web.com Intercollegiate at Marsh Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The four-time defending SoCon Champion opens play in the league tourney April 13-15 at Moss Creek Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
