de Groot Tabbed SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. Wofford’s Alex Rankin and Chattanooga’s Emma da Groot have been named Southern Conference co-women’s golfers of the week for March 19.

Rankin and da Groot each claimed individual medalist honors at separate tournaments this week with Rankin winning the Gainesville Shootout and da Groot claiming the Samford University Women’s Intercollegiate title. Rankin, a freshman from Anderson, S.C., became just the second Wofford women’s golfer to win an individual tournament championship. She recorded a second-round 68, which was the lowest 18 hole score of any round for the 87 competing individuals.

da Groot was the individual champion at the Samford University Women’s Intercollegiate, shooting a three-round total of 211. The Coffs Harbour, Australia native fired a low round of 68 in the event as the Lady Mocs placed second as a team. This was the freshman’s first tournament victory in addition to three second place and one third place finishes in 2007-08.

This is the first ever women’s golfer of the week honor for a Chattanooga player, as the Lady Mocs are in their first season of competition.

Another top performance was turned in by College of Charleston’s Steffi Kirchmayr.
