CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Chattanooga women’s golf team is sitting in fourth place after the first day of competition at the 2008 Southern Conference women’s championship at The Links at Stono Ferry Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.
Chattanooga carded a 17-over 305 at the Par 72, 6,022 yard course. The Lady Mocs have two players in the top 10 with freshman Christine Wolf tied for sixth with a 2-over, 74. Sophomore Kayla Stewart carded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 10th while freshman Emma de Groot and sophomore Katie Taylor at tied at 16th with matching 78s.
Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer leads the field at 2-under and the Lady Paladins are have a three-stroke lead over UNC Greensboro for the top spot at 6-over. The Spartans carded a first-round 297 followed by Elon with a 301. The Phoenix’s Danielle Mills is alone in second at 1-under with three players tied for third at 1-over par.
Furman, Elon and UNC Greensboro have three in the top 10 followed by Chattanooga’s pair. This is Chattanooga’s first appearance in the Southern Conference tournament since the program was reinstated this year after a more than 20-year hiatus. Second round action will begin at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
