de Groot Remains in Contention After Day Two

ATHENS, Ga. -- Chattanooga freshman Emma de Groot shot a 4-over 76 Friday to stay in the top 20 after Day Two of the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional at the par 72, 6,335 yard UGA Golf Course.

 

De Groot remains in contention to advance to the NCAA National Championships in New Mexico May 20-23. She started the day with a bogey on the first hole but evened it out by the sixth hole with her lone birdie of the day. On the back nine she recorded bogeys on 12 and 15 to close out the day 4-over.

 

First Round leader Duke, the overall No. 1 team, shot a 15-over Friday to drop three strokes behind No. 5 Florida with a 12-over 588. The Gators are the leaders after two rounds with a 9-over 585. South Carolina is third with a 594 followed by Auburn with a 598.

 

Host Georgia moved up four spots to a fifth place tie with the Southern Conference’s Furman University. Both schools are sporting a 599 through two rounds. Wake Forest, with a 603, and New Mexico, with a 605, round out the top eight. Louisville dropped down to 10th from fifth and Virginia is ninth with a 606.

 

Benedicte Toumpsin of South Carolina shot a 4-under par Friday to move into the top spot over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst by three strokes. First round leader Sara-Maude Juneau is tied for second at 3-under and Geogia’s Krystle Caithness moved up one spot to fourth with a two-round score of 143 (-1). UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez is tied with Caithness at fourth with an identical 1-under par.

 

Corrine Carr of Furman shot a 4-over Friday and moved from fourth to a four-way tie for seventh. De Groot is the tied for the fifth best score among individuals not on the top eight teams after two rounds. The top eight teams will advance to the nationals along with top two individuals not on those teams.

 

The regionals conclude Saturday and de Groot will tee off at 8:00 a.m. from the 10th tee. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com.
