HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team got off to a good start in defending its Southern Conference Championship, taking the lead after 18 holes at Moss Creek Golf Club.  Chattanooga's 303 (+15) is eight shots ahead of second-place UNC Greensboro at 311.

Senior Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) is the first round leader with a two-over par score of 74.  She is one shot clear of a trio of golfers at 75 (+3) including teammate Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) in second.

All five Mocs are ranked in the top 11.  Freshmen Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) and Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) are tied for fifth at plus five (77).  Junior Maria Juliana Loza is another shot back tied for 11th at 78 (+6).

Chattanooga was +13 at the turn, but found its stride on the back side.  Britt posted birdies at 11, 14 and 15 to get back to plus three before finishing at 77.  de Groot, Wolf and Loza all birdied the par four 16th as UTC carded six of its 10 birdies on the final nine.

The Mocs return to the course Monday at 10:30 a.m., with Loza teeing off No. 1.  She'll be followed by Duvernay (10:40), Britt (10:50), Wolf (11:00) and de Groot (11:10).  UTC will play with UNC Greensboro and College of Charleston.
