BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (26-25,10-10 SoCon) dropped both games of its Saturday double header against the Elon Phoenix (20-30,7-14 SoCon) at Hunt Softball Park. UTC fell 6-4 in the first contest and 2-1 in walk-off fashion in the second game.

Chattanooga 4 – Elon 6

The Phoenix jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning the double header’s first game. Tomeka Watson led off the inning with a double down the left field line and a sacrifice bunt from Aly Quintana moved the senior over to third. A sacrifice fly from Carleigh Nester scored the first run and a double from Johannah Spencer scored the inning’s second run.

Chattanooga tied the game in the top of the second as freshman first baseman Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.) singled with one out. Senior Ninjja Suetsugu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) reached on a fielder’s choice and Carson was forced out at second. Despite two outs on the board, Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) singled and freshman Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) followed up with a two-RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. The double was Taylor’s second hit of the game and helped extend her hitting streak to 15 games.

UTC’s lead fell through in the bottom of the third inning as Nester launched a towering solo home run by the left field foul pole, but Chattanooga answered back in the top of the fourth when freshman Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) lined a shot over the left centerfield fence to tie the game 3-3.

Elon issued a three-run blow in the fifth as the Phoenix were able to load the bases with two outs as Deason worked through her fourth inning. Despite being one out away from ending the inning, Spencer lined a double to right field, clearing in the bases and driving in all three runners, putting Elon on top 6-3.

The game saw a scoreless sixth but Chattanooga made a push in the seventh. Robles singled to right to lead off and junior Kaiti Dutton (Tulsa, Okla.) walked to board two runners. Junior Stephanie Rieck (Chandler, Ariz.) put down an infield single to load the bases and Suetsugu followed up with an infield hit to score one runner. With the bases loaded, a popup on the infield sealed the game for Elon, 6-4.

Sam Taylor was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Robles and Carson each recorded two hits in the game. Sophomore pitcher Deason was handed the loss – her 11th of the season – in six innings pitched. The sophomore gave up five earned runs and struck out three batters.
