BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State Mountaineers got the best of the Mocs volleyball team Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over Chattanooga in Boone, N.C. Only one attacker for each team totaled double-digit kills in a match that saw the scoring wealth distributed. Sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) was UTC’s leader, recording a double-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and 11.5 points.
Appalachian State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a convincing 25-12 victory in the first set. The Mountaineers’ Lauren Gray led the way on offense with 12 kills in the match. Gray managed four kills on seven attacks and a .429 hitting percentage. Chattanooga was held to eight kills in the set with a match-low .033 hitting percentage while App. State hit .464 in the set.
The second set went to the Mountaineers 25-19 as UTC was held to a .050 hitting percentage. Reid led the Chattanooga offense with four kills while she and junior Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) each came away with four digs. Junior Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) assisted with four blocks and freshman Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) added two.
Chattanooga managed 13 points in the third and final set of the match. Reid totaled four of the Mocs’ eight kills in the set. Along with its eight kills, UTC hit a match-best .105 to close out the trip to Boone.
With the loss, Chattanooga falls to 3-10 on the season while Appalachian State improves to 8-6 in the conference.
The Mocs wrap up the road trip Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. match with Western Carolina. After visiting Cullowhee, N.C., the Mocs return home to wrap up the season next weekend against Wofford and Furman.
