OWINGS MILLS, Md.---Slowly but surely the Chattanooga women’s golf team is working its way up the leaderboard at the 2009 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club.  The Lady Mocs shot the fourth best round of the morning tee times to move up to 17th at 928 (+64).

Chattanooga is ahead of No. 20 Arizona by one shot and No. 27 TCU by three.  Just four shots separate it and No. 15 Georgia which is in 14th place at 924 (+60).  No. 17 Michigan State (925) is 15th followed by No. 24 Tennessee (926) and UTC.

The Lady Mocs bested playing partners Tennessee and Tulane in today’s round.  They topped the Lady Vols (306) by a shot while standing 12 shots clear of Tulane.

“I like that we are improving each day,” said Head Coach Colette Murray.  “Tomorrow we have an opportunity to make a statement and make a strong move up the leaderboard.”

The low round of the day for the Lady Mocs came from freshman Maria Salinas with a three-over par 75 which matched her opening round score.  There were three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys on her card.  She played the par five holes at one-under par.  Through 54 holes, Salinas is 11-over par 227, the low player by a stroke for UTC.

Chattanooga got 76’s (+4) from Moa Duf and Emma de Groot.  Duf’s also had three birdies and nine pars on the day against five bogeys and a double.  Like Salinas, she played the par fives well at one under.  Duf’s 76 puts her at 234 (+18).

It was an interesting day for de Groot.  She had three birdies in her first eight holes before a tough stretch of bogey, bogey, double slowed her round.  She also carded one under on the par fives scoring two of her three birdies on those four holes and is 12-over par for the tournament, 228.

Christine Wolf regrouped from a slow start to post a 78 (+6).  She was six-over par through her first eight holes before playing even-par golf the final 10.  She got her lone birdie on the par four second hole, which played as No. 11 today as the Lady Mocs started off of No. 10.  Her back-to-back 78’s give her a three-day total of 241.

Things just did not go Maria Juliana Loza’s way today.  The freshman from Colombia had a tough day with an 88 (+16).  Maju is now at 253 through 54 holes.

Chattanooga carded 10 birdies in the third round giving it 26 for the tournament.  Salinas leads with nine, three per day.

The final round will start at 8:30 a.m. for the Lady Mocs who are paired with Tennessee and Arizona.  Loza will lead off followed by Wolf, Duf, de Groot and Salinas.
