Key & Wise Named to CFPA Defensive Backs Watch List

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- College Football Performance Awards, the largest awards organization in D-I college football, recently announced its watch list for the 2013 CFPA Defensive Back Award, and two Chattanooga defensive backs, seniors D.J. Key and Kadeem Wise, earned spots on the list. The preliminary watch list highlights 36 returning performers, vying for the top individual defensive back award in the Football Championship Subdivision.

"Congratulations to D.J. Key and Kadeem Wise on earning spots on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Key and Wise give Chattanooga exceptional returning talent on pass defense for 2013."

Chattanooga is one of only four programs (along with Albany, Maine, and McNeese) to have multiple players earn spots on the 2013 CFPA Defensive Back Award Watch List. Key and Wise join teammates Jacob Huesman (QB), Faysal Shafaat (TE), Derrick Lott (DL), Davis Tull (DL), and Wes Dothard (LB) on the 2013 CFPA Watch List.

Key, a native of Centerville, Tenn., is a two-time All-Southern Conference selection for the Mocs.  He has played in 34 games with 24 starts and was a first-team all-league pick by the media in 2012.  He was second on the team with 82 tackles last season and has five career interceptions.  In 2011, he scored on a school-record 85-yard pick-six against Western Carolina.

Wise, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., is a three-time All-SoCon selection.  He is trying to become the first Moc to earn a spot on the all-conference team all four years of his career.  He has started all 33 games over the past three years and is tied for fifth all-time at UTC with 10 career interceptions.  Last season, he earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting eight tackles and a pick at The Citadel.  He was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2010.

All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.

The full list of 2013 recipients, including the 2013 CFPA FCS Awards, will be announced on January 8, 2014.  For more information, visit the Official CFPA Website (http://www.collegefootballperformance.com). Follow CFPA on Twitter @CFPerformance.
