Quotes & Video from Tuesday's Media Luncheon

The Chattanooga Mocs are back in action on the gridiron this weekend. It’s the Southern Conference home opener for UTC as it welcomes Western Carolina to town. Kickoff is at 6 p.m., at Finley Stadium.

Mocs Head Coach Russ Huesman visited with the media at the Mocs Media Luncheon in McKenzie Arena today.  He was joined by defensive tackle Danny Ring and quarterback Jacob Huesman.

Head Coach Russ Huesman
Opening Statement
“That was a tough one to lose. That was pretty disappointing. Any time you lose a close football game to a really good team, it hurts. I think our team really hurt after that game, and it was a physical game. With that being said, I thought our players played extremely hard and left everything they had out on the football field. I don’t think there’s any question about that, and it was a battle even after watching the film. We played hard and Georgia Southern played hard. We both came to play. We had opportunities, made mistakes that hurt us and missed some stuff people normally don’t see – like missed assignments. If we continue to play hard like that and clean up some penalties, we can compete the rest of the year.”

Thoughts on coming off the bye week
“We had 12 penalties. Four or five of them may have been illegal formations or too many men in the backfield. They were close calls and we may have been a bit in a gray area. That may have been caused by the bye week. Now we have to clean that up, and I think we will. It happened a lot on receivers. Our guys are going to keep working and playing like they have. We are going to be fine.”

On this weekend against Western Carolina
“It’s a lot easier to get ready for a game after a loss than it is after a win. If they don’t have a sick feeling in their stomachs, they will not be ready. But I know they are excited to practice and to play. They want to get rid of that feeling. Western Carolina is athletic. They are playing a lot of young guys. They look athletic, and they can run. I think they are doing it the right way and I feel that they are on the right track. They are well-coached. We have to be ready for them.”

Feeling after the loss to Georgia Southern

“Even though this is my first season here, it is easy to see how the Georgia Southern loss hurt us. Seeing they guys after the game showed me how hard of a hit the loss really was, but now we have to move past it and win the next one. We can’t forget it because we want to remember how it felt to lose because we don’t want to feel it again.”

Jacob Huesman, Quarterback, Sophomore
On regrouping and getting ready for Western Carolina

“After the game, I was asking myself how it happened again. We always play them hard and something always seems to happen against Georgia Southern. It’s hard to figure out what we need to do different to change that, but now we have to look to Western Carolina. Regardless of the Georgia Southern outcome, we have to approach Western Carolina and play angry. We have to play with a chip on our shoulder after losing.”
