Mocs Announce 2014 Football Schedule

The Chattanooga Mocs announced the 2014 football schedule today.  UTC will play a 12-game slate that includes five home contests at Finley Stadium.  Road games are highlighted by an Oct. 11 trip to Tennessee.

UTC starts the hunt for another Southern Conference championship on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Central Michigan.  This is the first meeting between the Mocs and the Chippewas.  It is also the third year in a row, and the fourth time in the Russ Huesman era (since 2009), UTC has played on a Thursday night.  It is the first week-night road game since opening the 2006 season at Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Aug. 41.

The home schedule kicks off with a big non-conference matchup against Ohio Valley member Jacksonville State on Sept. 6.  The Gamecocks posted a 12-2 record in 2013, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA FCS Tournament.  JSU also ended the year ranked No. 10 in the nation, the highest ranking in program history.  UTC is 26-11 all-time against the Gamecocks, but just 1-2 in the Huesman era.

The Jacksonville State game is the first of three against teams ranked in the final 2013 FCS Top-25.  Samford ended the year No. 18 while Furman was ranked as high as 21st in the country.

Chattanooga hits the road again for another non-conference game against a member of the OVC with the Sept. 13 trip to Austin Peay.  The Mocs are 5-0 all-time against the Governors, including last year’s 42-10 win in Chattanooga.  That was the first game in the series since 1968, which was also Chattanooga’s only other trip to Clarksville.

After an open week, UTC starts SoCon action against co-champion Samford on Sept. 27.  The Mocs lost in overtime to the Bulldogs late in 2013, costing them the outright league title.  UTC is 26-10-3 all-time against Samford in a series that dates back to 1906.  The Mocs are 4-1 against the Bulldogs under Coach Huesman.

Homecoming is set for Oct. 4 against VMI.  UTC will welcome the Keydets back to Chattanooga for the first time since 2002 as they return to the SoCon.  They spent the last 11 years as members of the Big South.  UTC is 12-7-1 all-time against VMI, but dropped the last two in the series in 2001 and 2002.

A much-anticipated trip to Knoxville is on tap for Oct. 11.  This will be the first game against Tennessee since 1969.  Chattanooga is 2-35-2 all-time against the Vols.  The Mocs last win in the series was a celebrated 14-6 win in Knoxville on Nov. 8, 1958.

The Mocs stay on the road the following week at The Citadel before welcoming another new SoCon member Mercer on Oct. 25.  The Bears started their FCS program last season with a 10-2 campaign.  UTC was 16-6-1 against Mercer between 1909 and 1941.

The next two weeks are at Western Carolina (Nov. 1) and the home finale against Wofford on Nov. 8.  The Mocs step out of conference with a Nov. 15 trip to Tennessee Tech and wrap up the season at SoCon co-champ Furman on Nov. 22.

2013 season ticket holders should look for renewal information that will be mailed out on Monday, March 3.  Season tickets will go on sale to the general public two weeks later on Monday, March 17.
