Mocs Show Improvement in Second Scrimmage

The Chattanooga Mocs showed marked improvement in their second scrimmage of the spring at Finley Stadium this afternoon.  UTC moved the ball and reached the end zone five times in an 80-play workout.

“It was better than the last one and that is a good thing,” stated head coach Russ Huesman.  “We looked crisper, both sides of the ball.  Looked like we executed better offensively today.  It looked a little bit better today, but we will wait until we see the film.”

The Mocs offensive line set the tone early, establishing a running game that allowed UTC to score on four of its first six possessions.  On the second drive, 54 of the 65 yards were gained on the ground.

Sophomore Xavier Borishade had an 18-yard reverse and freshman tight end Malcolm Colvin caught a 16-yard pass over the middle for big plays on the drive.  Sophomore Derrick Craine capped it off with a seven-yard TD run.

The backup freshmen quarterbacks again took most of the snaps and each showed flashes in different ways.   Alejandro Bennifield was 6-8 passing for 104 yards and a TD while Tyler Roberson led the team with 76 rushing yards and a TD on nine carries.

The chunk of Bennifield’s offense came on a screen pass that senior Marquis Green turned into a 51-yard TD strike.  He also had a nice 18-yard hookup with sophomore C.J. Board late in the scrimmage.

Roberson showed off his legs for the first time in a scrimmage, highlighted by a 33-yard QB draw for a touchdown.  He seemed to surprise the defensive backs with his speed once he got into the open field.

Junior starter Jacob Huesman was 5-11 for 67 yards, including a nine-yard TD hookup with senior TE Faysal Shafaat.  Craine had a productive outing with 42 yards and a score on eight carries.  Green finished with 57 receiving yards on two catches while Board had three receptions for 55 yards.

Defensively, the Mocs had a number of big plays.  The highlight was an interception by sophomore Dee Virgin that was going to be an 80-yard pick-six before the play was blown dead.  Sophomore Keionta Davis had two hurries and a tackle-for-loss while freshman D.J. Prather broke up a pass and recorded a TFL of his own.

The Mocs will be back at Scrappy Moore Field for their 12th workout of the spring tomorrow.  UTC will hold practices on Monday and Wednesday in preparation for the 2014 Spring Game on Friday, April 11.

Gates open at 5:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium for the FREE Kids Clinic that begins at 5:15 p.m.  Parents of youth eight grade and younger can preregister their kids here, or sign them up at the game.  The Spring Game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.).
