Preseason Publications Listing Mocs High in the Rankings

Coming off its first Southern Conference Championship in 30 years, there are high expectations for the 2014 edition of the Chattanooga Mocs football team.  Three publications that cover the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) have also taken notice and listed UTC high in their preseason prognostications.

Chattanooga is No. 10 in the Lindy’s preseason top-25, No. 12 in Athlon and No. 14 in The Sporting News poll.  While none of these are officially recognized rankings, they still represent the continued ascent of the Mocs program.

UTC posted an 8-4 overall record in 2013, the most wins for the team since 1980.  It also shared the SoCon title with Samford and Furman at 6-2 in league action.  The six SoCon wins were the most ever for Chattanooga.

The Mocs just missed the playoffs last season, and finished the year ranked as high as No. 21 in the nation.  It was the first final national ranking for the program since 1984.  Last year, UTC was No. 18 in Athlon and No. 20 in Lindy’s and The Sporting News preseason polls.

There are three opponents on the Mocs schedule who are also grabbing preseason recognition.  Jacksonville State ranks as high as No. 4 in The Sporting News, while Wofford is No. 15 in Lindy’s.  Furman is No. 19 in the Athlon poll.

Chattanooga returns 15 starters, including the SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.  Junior QB Jacob Huesman leads an offensive unit that has eight starters back, while senior DE Davis Tull anchors one of the top defensive lines in the FCS.

UTC kicks off the season with a trip to Central Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 28.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) and is available on ESPN3.  The first home game of the season is Sept. 6 against Jacksonville State.  Season tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
