The Chattanooga Mocs opened fall camp at the Murphy-Haugerud Football Practice Complex at Scrappy Moore Field this afternoon. Sixth-year Head Coach Russ Huesman put the Mocs through a 24-period workout on a gorgeous afternoon in the Scenic City.
With temps in the low 80s and a blue sky overhead, UTC got to work living up to high preseason expectations. The Mocs are picked to win the Southern Conference by both the league’s coaches and media for the first time since 1982.
“It was your typical first day of practice,” stated Huesman. “We are excited, as coaches, to finally get out there with the team, and I believe the guys were excited, too. If they weren’t, we have some problems. But I think they we were ready to get out here and get things underway.”
There are a total of 92 student-athletes on the roster for the start of camp. All 19 signees from UTC's highly-touted recruiting class were on the field, along with another 12 new faces. Luckily, Chattanooga has an experienced coaching staff and 24 upperclassmen that kept things moving.
“There are always going to be some mess-ups here and there,” stated junior offensive lineman Synjen Herren. “A lot of it is organizational stuff. Some of the guys haven’t been here all summer while a bunch of them have been. Having everyone out here becomes a little bit of a cluster, but that’s what the first day is about. It’s about getting the helmets on, getting with your team and working on things as a unit rather than working individually.”
The MocsVision Crew grabbed some interviews with Coach Huesman, junior quarterback and SoCon Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Jacob Huesman and senior defensive lineman and two-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Davis Tull. Be sure to check out what they had to say, along with the attached photo gallery.
It will be an early day for the next two practices. UTC is back at Scrappy at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday and Friday this week. The season opener is just over four weeks away with an August 28 trip to Central Michigan.
The home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 6, against Jacksonville State at 6:00 p.m. Season tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
