University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head football coach Russ Huesman announced team captains for the upcoming season this week. Seniors Tommy Hudson and Davis Tull and juniors Josh Freeman and Jacob Huesman were selected by their teammates as the leaders of the program.
“This is a very big honor and an important responsibility for these four individuals,” stated Huesman. “All four of these guys were chosen by their teammates and are excellent leaders. They also represent themselves, our football program and our University by doing things the right way, on and off the field.”
This is the second year in in a row Huesman has been selected captain. He is entering his third season as the Mocs starting quarterback and is the preseason Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
Last year, he led the Mocs with 894 rushing yards and 1,637 passing yards, while earning SoCon Offensive Player of the Year honors from the league’s coaches. Huesman is also on the 2014 Walter Payton Award Watch List for the top offensive player in the FCS.
Tull is the SoCon’s two-time Defensive Player of the Year and the preseason pick to win the honor again. He is already the Mocs’ all-time sack leader and the active career leader in the FCS with 26.5 sacks. A preseason All-American, Tull is on the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award Watch list given to the FCS Defensive Player of the Year.
Hudson is the most experienced receiver on the team, having made 19 starts in 31 games over the last three years. He has 64 catches for 595 yards and is expected to lead a young and talented group of receivers.
Freeman was a second team All-SoCon pick in 2013 after starting every game. The league coaches tabbed him for the second team again in the preseason as he leads a veteran group on the interior of the defensive line.
The Mocs start the season in two weeks with a trip to Central Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) on ESPN3. The home opener is Saturday, Sept. 6 against No. 6 Jacksonville State at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
