Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis standout Ankit Chopra had an outstanding showing at the 2014 USTA National Men’s Open last week. A 2013 graduate of UTC, Chopra finished third at the event in Newport, Rhode Island.
“I have played in big tournaments like this my whole life, so I know how tough it is to advance at these,” stated UTC men’s tennis head coach Carlos Garcia. “For Ankit to go out and finish third in his first one is a huge accomplishment.”
Chopra was unseeded but ran off three straight win to advance to the quarterfinals. He opened with a (6-1, 6-1) upset over No. 12 Dion Earl (Mesa, Ariz.) and followed that with a (6-2, 6-0) victory against ison (Naperville, Ill.) in the second round.
After a third round bye, he defeated 13th seed Benn Marler (7-5, 7-5) from Tampa, Fla. He lost to top-seeded and eventual champion Danny Riggs (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the quarters. He then posted a consolation win over Eduardo Irizarry (Lajas, PR) to take third place (6-2, 2-0 ret.).
Chopra was a second team All-Southern Conference double player during his two-year career at UTC. He spent last season as a student assistant coach with the Mocs, but will concentrate on his playing career in 2014-15.
