Mocs Ink 16-Member Recruiting Class

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman announced the Mocs' 2010 football recruiting class today.  The Mocs will welcome 16 new faces to the Scenic City next season as UTC continues to "Restore the Glory" to Chattanooga football.

Huesman, who is entering his second season leading the Mocs, brought in the No. 9 rated recruiting class in the FCS according to Rivals.com, last season.  With less than two months to recruit after being hired in December 2008, he and his staff put together one of the top classes in the nation.

Consisting of 14 freshman and two transfers, this year's group looks to be just as highly touted.  Not surprising since the coaching staff had a full season to work the recruiting trails.

"The class is a good, solid class, added Huesman.  "It was a different year from last year because we were on some kids throughout the year and through the summer.  We got some commitments early and we had those kids hang in with us through the entire process."

Sticking to Huesman's recruiting philosophy, the Mocs focused on high school seniors except for the two transfers who will look to fit into the UTC system.  Chris Donald (6-1, 225) is a transfer from Tennessee who was a five-star recruit coming out of high school in 2006.  The Huntingdon, Tenn., native was the No. 1 rated inside linebacker as a senior in high school.

Nick Davison (6-0, 280) is a former two-star recruit who is transferring from UAB.  A Calhoun, Ga. native, Davison will be looking for time on the defensive line.  Both are currently enrolled at UTC and will be juniors with two years of eligibility remaining when the 2010 season starts.

Another one of Huesman's recruiting philosophies is to recruit student-athletes from the local area.  All but two members of this year's class are from Georgia or Tennessee.  Defensive end Keyon Reed and tight end Faysal Shafaat are the only players from outside of the region and they hail from nearby Florida.  Shafaat was a top-100 Central Florida recruit from Orlando Lutheran while Reed is a talented defensive player from Palm Bay, Fla.

The Mocs had six players sign from the Chattanooga area, highlighted by 2009 Tennessee Mr. Football Division I-A Back of the Year Terrell Robinson.  Robinson is a 6-3, 180- pound quarterback from South Pittsburg, Tenn.  He is joined by fellow Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps honorees Devin Caldwell, Keith Mayes and Keon Williams.

Caldwell is a 6-5, 250-pound offensive lineman from Boyd Buchanan School.  Mayes, (5-9, 202) a defensive back, and Williams (6-0, 215) a running back, were teammates at Red Bank High School in Chattanooga.  All three were all-state honorees and Mayes and Williams made the Tennessean Dream Team.

Other Chattanooga area players include Davison, and Zack Rayl.  Rayl (6-3, 208) is an all-region linebacker from McMinn Central HS.

Nick Pollard (6-0, 180) highlights a list of other players from Tennessee to sign with the Mocs.  He was the 2009 Tennessee Mr. Football Kicker of the Year and on the Tennessean Dream Team.  Bryant Belew (6-3, 198) is an all-state receiver from Columbia, Tenn., while a pair of Memphis student-athletes are also set to join UTC in the fall.  Chaz Moore (5-10, 160) is a two-star defensive back from Whitehaven High School and Devin Scates is a talented defensive lineman from Westwood High School.

The class is rounded out by a trio of Georgia student-athletes, including offensive linemen Taylor Dodds (6-5, 260) and Chas Presnell (6-6, 265) and linebacker Muhasibi Wakeel (5-11, 200).   Dodds is an all-region lineman from Columbus and Presnell is also all-region lineman from Carrollton.  Wakeel is an all-state linebacker from Decatur.

Don't forget to head out to the Stadium Club at 5:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) today for the FREE "Signing Day Celebration."  All Mocs fans - and football fans in general - are invited to attend.  For more details, click here.
