The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team held its first scrimmage of the spring on a rain-soaked afternoon in Chattanooga today.  The Mocs got in 88 plays of live action at Finley Stadium, despite a constant downpour throughout the practice.

"I think they liked it," stated head coach Russ Huesman.  "I didn't like it too much, but I think that they did.  It was a heavy ball out there and you could tell that.  It was like shot-putting the ball half of the time."

The Mocs were squeezing in the scrimmage around a very busy schedule in Chattanooga that included the men's and women's basketball teams in action at the Southern Conference Tournament in McKenzie Arena.  The Lady Mocs played at 11:00 a.m. and the men tipped off at 7:00 p.m.

Finley Stadium is also host to a Major League Soccer preseason exhibition game between the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew on Sunday that further hampered the ability to move the scrimmage due to weather.

"There is nothing you can do about it," added Huesman.  "Hopefully we blocked and tackled in some capacity and we got something out of it.  We had some nice throws and catches.  It looked like they were having some fun."

Senior quarterback B.J. Coleman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished the day 11-16 for 116 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  He and sophomore Marlon Anthony (Acworth, Ga.) hooked up for plays of 37 and 17 yards during the day.  Anthony finished with four catches for 63 yards and one touchdown.

"It was wet," laughed Coleman.  "Offensively, we moved the ball well.  Some guys came and made some key plays.  I thought Marlon did a good job today.  For it being so wet I thought we held on to the football well.  All-in-all I thought the offense got better today."

Freshman Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led the ground game with 60 yards on eight carries.  He did have two fumbles, but they both came late in the day when the turf at Finley Stadium had turned into a swamp.

On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Chaz Moore (Memphis, Tenn.) was impressive with four tackles, an interception and one pass breakup.  Freshmen Ty Stannard (Franklin, Tenn.) and Zach McCarter (Chattanooga, Tenn.) were also solid with an interception and pass breakup each.

The Mocs are back on the field on Monday, March 7.  They will take the field at Finley at 3:30 p.m. for their seventh practice of the spring.  The Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 2 at 3:00 p.m. at Finley.
