The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team took part in its second scrimmage of spring practice at Finley Stadium tonight.  After 20 minutes of heavy rain to open the workout, the Mocs were able to get in a 90-play session on a nice evening at Finley Stadium.

The defense dominated the first scrimmage on March 7, but the offense looked much better tonight.  The Mocs scored three touchdowns on offense and moved the ball in the air and on the ground throughout the evening.

Roster management was also key as nine players were sidelined today.  Offensive linemen Devin Caldwell (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Taylor Dodds (Columbus, Ga.) and Synjen Herren (Dalton, Ga.), fullback Taharin Tyson (Alcoa, Tenn.), tight end Jarrod Coleman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and defensive lineman Josh Freeman (Atlanta, Ga.) have been out for most, if not all, of spring practice.  They were joined on the sidelines by running backs Chris Awuah (Marietta, Ga.) and Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and defensive tackle Toyvian Brand (Greensboro, Ala.) who were also resting various aches and pains.

"We had a lot of guys out, but we were still able to assess the offense," said head coach Russ Huesman.  "I thought the offense did a really nice job today.  I really like our quarterback play.  You can see that both of those guys bring a lot to the table.  I thought they both handled the offense really well."

Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) put up quality numbers, completing seven of 14 passes for 97 yards while rushing eight times for 100 yards.  He had the longest play of the evening, a 60-yard run to the two-yard line early in the scrimmage.

Terrell Robinson (south Pittsburg, Tenn.) had two scoring throws, both 12-yarders to tight end Faysal Shafaat (Orlando, Fla.).  He finished 5-9 passing for 48 yards and the two touchdowns.  He also ran nine times for 32 yards.

Marquis Green (Palmetto, Fla.) led the running backs with 11 rushes for 86 yards and one touchdown.  He scored on second and six from the seven yard line, getting to the outside and crossing the line untouched.   J.J. Jackson (Marietta, Ga.) had 11 carries for 62 yards while Kendrix Huitt (Atlanta, Ga.) finished with 13 carries for 56 yards.

Bryant Belew (Columbia, Tenn.) led the receivers with two catches for 50 yards.  He and Huesman hooked up for a 42-yard gain late in the evening.  Shafaat ended his night with three catches for 29 yards and the two touchdowns from Robinson.  A total of eight players had at least one catch.

On the defensive side the ball, Chris Mayes (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had the highlight of the evening.  He scooped up a J.J. Jackson fumble and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.  Davis Tull (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a pair of sacks while Zack Rayl (Englewood, Tenn.) added another.

"Defensively we were not real good," added Huesman.  "We had some kids out.  We were really thin at defensive tackle and that hurts, but that is no excuse.  I don't think we ran to the ball like we should."

The Mocs have two more practices before the Spring Game on Saturday, March 31.  The Spring Game is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Finley Stadium with a FREE Kid's Clinic on the field at Noon.   The women's soccer team starts the festivities with an alumni match at 9:00 a.m. and a scrimmage against Bryan College at 10:00 a.m.  All of the day's activities are free.  Check GoMocs.com later this week for more details.
