University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior defensive lineman Josh Williams was recently named to the College Football Performance Awards Defensive End & Defensive Tackle Watch List for the upcoming season.  Williams, the Mocs' all-time leader with 21.5 career sacks, is a two-time All-Southern Conference performer.

Williams, a native of Griffin, Ga., is one of 40 named to the watch list that also includes four others from the SoCon.  He led the league with 9.5 sacks in 2011, earning a spot on the All-SoCon First Team for the first time in his career.

At 6-2 and 235 pounds, Williams uses his dynamic mix of speed and strength on the end.  Last season, he was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after tying a career-high with seven tackles and three sacks at Samford.  He had four multi-sack games in 2011 and anchored a young, but talented defensive line.

Williams is the now the leader of a very experienced line that includes the return of sophomore Davis Tull (Knoxville, Tenn.) on the opposite end.  Tull and Williams combined for 14.5 sacks and are expecting that number to rise in 2012.

According to their website (CollegeFootballPerformance.com), the goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

As prominent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines note, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate balloting-based awards. Furthermore, CFPA has received praise from both Republican and Democratic White House officials for promoting objectivity and fairness in college football.

Williams is the second Moc to be named to a 2012 CFPA Watch List.  Sophomore Faysal Shafaat (Orlando, Fla.) was also made group's tight end list.

The Mocs open the season with a trip to South Florida on Sept. 1. The home schedule kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 13 against Glenville State. Season tickets are on sale now with more information available here.
