MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) won the women's 3000 meter run while three more claimed runner-up spots at the Valentine Indoor Track and Field Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee at the Murphy Center Saturday.
Henderson outdistanced her nearest competitor by nearly five seconds with a time of 10:11.00 in her longest run of the indoor season. Junior Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) finished second in the women's Mile with a time of 5:04.10 and freshman Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.), running her first mile, placed 11th with a time of 5:23.95.
"Teghan is a fireball," UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. "I love her attitude. She runs hard and has a good future ahead of her. Amanda did a great job. She ran a conservative race and I'm happy with her performance."
In the 800m, the women each won their respective heat beginning with sophomore Jessica Philpott (Manchester, Tenn.) who finished with a time of 2:24.05. Freshman Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) won hers with a time of 2:26.69 and classmate Helenka Kis (Columbia, Tenn.) topped her heat with a time of 2:33.91. Sophomore Ambria Reese (Memphis, Tenn.) had a time of 2:27.03.
Junior Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.) ran the 400 meter in a time of 1:01.21 followed by classmate Sarah Washington (Tullahoma, Tenn.) with a time of 1:06.44.
Senior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) finished second in the men's Mile, 1.35 seconds behind top place finisher Shadrick Matelong of host Middle Tennessee. Wanuch ran a PR time of 4:15.10. Freshman Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) was eighth in the event with a time of 4:25.06 followed by classmate Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) with a time of 4:31.57.
Freshman Iman Isang (Chattanooga, Tenn.) ran a PR 7.99 in the 55m hurdle prelims and finished second in the finals with a time of 8.00, just 0.07 off the top time set by Tennessee State's Jason Griffin.
In the men's 3000m run, junior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) placed fifth with a time of 8:48.22 in his longest indoor distance. The men's 800m was populated by freshman with Trevor Janssen (St. Catherine's, Ontario) leading the way in seventh with a time of 1:57.52 with classmates Austin Ethridge (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) recording a 2:01.75.
DeQuantez Sandifer (Nashville, Tenn.) was the third Chattanooga runner across the line with a time of 2:03.14 followed by Taylor Hawk (Dandridge, Tenn.) at 2:03.96 and Zack Darby (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a time of 2:04.29. Senior Blake Olson (Pleasantview, Tenn.) had a time of 51.90 in the men's 400m followed by freshman Tosin Ayotunde (Ooltewah, Tenn.) with a time of 53.22.
"The guys are struggling right now with illness and injury and we really miss Lucas [Cotter] and Mark [Cole]," Gautier said. "Fortunately Nathan is good to go and had a great race and John Gilpin pretty tough running a longer race than he's used to and Matthew Marshall is pretty consistent.
"This was a tougher meet than usual and it's not an easy track for the newcomers to run because of its setup and distance."
