Head Coach John Shulman
Opening Statement ... "I'm proud of our kids. The effort was phenomenal. It was a great basketball game. Give credit to Greensboro. Wes Miller did a nice job making some adjustments. Their seniors stepped up. Derrell Armstrong stepped up in a big way. I was proud of our kids. They fought through a lot of adversity this year and I'm awfully proud to be their basketball coach. We withstood a punch and came back, but you have to give UNCG credit. They made some big shots but we never stopped fighting. We never quit. I was awfully proud to be their coach."
On Armstrong's performance... "I said to our radio guy before the game that I thought it was Armstrong's turn. They have three guys who can really score it. Trevis Simpson had 41 on us. Paulos had 30 on us. We understood that. He was four-for-five from three in big situations. Korey Van Dussen made a big one. That's what seniors are supposed to do around tournament time."
Junior forward Z Mason
On what his goal was going into the game..."I just wanted to give us a spark from the beginning and set the tone for the team. We have a lot of young guys and I wanted to show them how to play in tournament time. We had a decent game but it hurts to come out on the losing side."
Head Coach Wes Miller
Opening statement ... "I was really proud of our guys. We fought and competed. We never wavered. It's been something we've dealt with all year. When things haven't gone well and we have faced a little adversity, we have been the team that has given it. Tonight they shot it well and made more plays than us early, but we never for one second looked like we were giving in. I felt togetherness like I hadn't felt from this group before. I'm just really proud of the team effort. It isn't about one individual effort tonight. I'm really proud of the team effort to come back from the double-digit deficit in the second-half and pull out a win in the conference tournament. I'm proud of our team tonight. This is good as I've felt about our team this year. But there are not celebrations now. We didn't come here for one name. Our focus is on Elon tomorrow, immediately."
On getting their second close win of the season... "It's a mentality. These type of moments sometimes bring the best out of teams. I think it brought the best out of our team tonight. But I'm not celebrating. I think it's something we have to carry over and build upon going into tomorrow."
Senior guard Derrell Armstrong
On what changed for him in the second half... "At halftime, we talked about needing a bigger sense of urgency. We knew if we lose that we're going home and we had to leave it all on the floor and give 100 percent. Even though I did go on a stretch where I had some buckets, the shots were from my teammates making extra passes, driving and kicking, and things like that. They were really finding me and setting me up in positions to score."
On how he felt during his 9 point scoring stretch.... "A lot of times you just need to see a couple of shots go in. Once you hit a few, the basket seems bigger and bigger. After a while, it just seems like you can't miss. Again, credit my teammates for giving me open shots to take. Passes, drives and kicks and screens make those shots easier to get. "
