The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team takes on No. 1 Alabama Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while two Southern Conference matchups could decide the playoff fate of the SoCon champion Mocs. Chattanooga coaches and players discussed last week's game at Samford while previewing the upcoming week.

Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman, junior offensive lineman Brandon Morgan and sophomore defensive lineman Josh Freeman met with the media Tuesday, accompanied by the 2013 SoCon championship trophy.

Chattanooga Head Coach Russ Huesman
Thoughts on the Samford game
“It was a heck of a football game. It was a pretty physical football game on both sides. I thought Samford played well and I was proud of our guys for coming back. We were down 14-0 in the fourth quarter and they came back, fought and continued to play. We made some plays to get that thing into overtime, but we just came up a little short. I am proud of our guys and the effort. I know Samford is proud of their guys and the effort they gave. That was a good college football game. We have Alabama this week. It’s a huge test but I know our guys will be excited to go play.”

How he believes his team will react going into practice this week
“I think our guys are going to be excited to play. I think every one of them wants to play and wants to see what they can do in this setting. We have a pretty good group of guys who come to work every day, do what they’re supposed to do and more. If it’s Alabama or anybody else, I think our team will come back focused. Today’s practice will look the same as every other practice over the last six or seven weeks.”

On the Mocs’ downfall against Samford
“We scored seven points on offense this week. We aren’t doing backflips and throwing parties. Seven points is not very good and it’s unacceptable. I don’t care how many yards we had, it’s their job to put points on the board as an offensive staff and offensive group. We didn’t get it done, and it was a bunch of people and reasons why we didn’t get it done. It wasn’t just one person. I wasn’t please offensively this week at all, but I was extremely pleased defensively. We gave up the one pass, but if you look up statistically that we hold a team to 14 points that’s averaging 30-something points, I think you’re having a great day. I think they should be proud of the defensive effort but not offensively. We have to get it done and better than that.”

Thoughts on Alabama
“Alabama plays so hard and they are fundamentally sound. They have great players. If you put those three together, you have a chance to be elite. They are where they’re supposed to be and play hard. They are well coached and extremely athletic. They don’t give up points to just anybody. We have our work cut out for us.”

Expectations of the Alabama game
“I am going to judge the performance on Sunday when I come in and look at the film. Not after the game, how many points we got or what the score was. We will evaluate the film based on how hard guys are playing, if they are doing what we asked them to do, executing and fighting. No matter what happens over the course of the game, that’s all we expect and that’s what we expect every weekend. We just want to put the film on and see unbelievable effort. I think that’s what we have to get out of our guys. We have to win individual battles. We can’t turn the ball over offensively and we can’t get destroyed in the kicking game. We can’t miss tackles and let them get behind us in the secondary. It will get out of hand if that happens and we can’t do that.”

What it means to have the Southern Conference championship
“It means that our hard work paid off. One of our main goals on this Chattanooga football team was to win the Southern Conference championship, and I am glad to see that we have finally achieved that goal. I have been here for three years and I am very proud to have this trophy sitting next to me.”

On what it will be like to play Alabama
“It’s a football game, so all you can do is take it play-by-play. For me, finishing my block and doing my assignment is all I can do.”

On preparation for Alabama
“It’s just preparation. You have to prepare for the game Tuesday-Thursday. Working on offense, working on assignments and working on blocking techniques coming off the line is all you can do. Alabama will be a fantastic challenge.”

What was different about this Mocs team than any other
“This team was confident and knew we could win. We knew what we needed to do and went out there and did it. We weren’t worried about what other teams did and if that boosted our ranking. We went out there and did it ourselves this season because we had that confidence.”
