The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team cracked the top 25 for the first time in the Heath Eslinger era today. The Mocs check in at No. 23 in this week’s USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll for January 14.
This is the first national ranking for the Mocs since finishing the 2007-08 regular season at No. 18. UTC is currently 10-5 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference matches. The squad is coming off a 4-1 showing and a fifth-place finish at the Virginia Duals last weekend.
Four of the Mocs’ five losses are against teams currently ranked in the top 25, including No. 12 Virginia, No. 16 Virginia Tech, No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 22 Purdue. UTC’s other loss was against Rider in the Hokie Duals, but that defeat was avenged at the Virginia Duals on Saturday.
Chattanooga’s signature win is a 25-13 victory over then No. 15 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., on Dec. 20. It also has a 16th-place showing at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, a sixth-place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions and a fifth-place spot at the Navy Classic.
Chattanooga hits the road again this weekend for Southern Conference action at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Edwardsville, Ill. The Eagles are an affiliate member of the Southern Conference in wrestling only.
UTC’s final home match of the season is Sunday, Feb. 2, against Appalachian State. Match time against the Mountaineers is 2:00 p.m.
